Parents are often so overwhelmed when they lose a baby child that the details of the funeral service seem nearly unmanageable. Sometimes they may need assistance in choosing songs that will be comforting and appropriate for the funeral service. Here are some helpful tips on how to choose funeral music for child's service.

Using Recordings or a Vocalist

The first decision that needs to be made is whether to use a recording from a CD or MP3 or to use a vocalist who would sing at the funeral. The challenge of using a vocalist is two part, finding someone with the vocal talent as well as a person who can deliver the song without becoming distraught during his or her performance. If a suitable singer can not be used, recordings still can provide a calming backdrop and time of peaceful reflection for those in attendance.

Child Songs for a Funeral

One avenue of song selection is to use a simple child song. If the baby or child showed a preference for a particular piece, consider if it would make a touching addition to the funeral songs. Some ideas might include:

  • "This Little Light of Mine"
  • "Jesus Loves Me"
  • "Jesus Loves the Little Children
  • "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands
  • "All Through the Night," or another classic lullaby

Contemporary Hits

Another source would be to consider contemporary hits. Many lyrics today can provide a touching atmosphere with their familiar verses and chorus. The family might wish to consider their own musical tastes when selecting popular songs for the funeral service. Do they prefer country music, pop hits, or contemporary Christian music?

Funeral Hymns and Religious Songs

Depending on the family's faith, they may also wish to incorporate hymns or religious songs during the service. In addition to the children's songs above, there are many beautiful songs from which to choose. Noted beside the title are clips of some of the verses

  • "Softly and Tenderly": Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me;See, on the portals He’s waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me.
  • "His Eye Is on the Sparrow": 'Let not your heart be troubled,' His tender word I hear, And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
  • "Amazing Grace": Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease,I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace."
  • "Abide With Me": Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
  • "Blessed Assurance": Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
  • "Great Is Thy Faithfulness": Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
  • "How Great Thou Art": And when I think that God His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die - I scarce can take it in, That on the cross my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin:
  • "To God Be the Glory": To God be the glory, great things He hath done; So loved He the world that He gave us His Son, Who yielded His life an atonement for sin, And opened the Life Gate that all may go in.
