When a friend of mine gifted me with two tommee tippee milk bibs, I loved them so much I went out and bought a few more. While shopping, I spied tommee tippee bottles and figured since I was so pleased with the bibs, I might as well try the bottles too. However, I can't say I was nearly as delighted with the baby bottles as I was with the bibs.
Features of Closer to Nature Bottles by Tommee Tippee
I have to admit that part of the thing that caught my eye with the Closer to Nature bottles that tommee tippee puts out was their interesting design. I've not seen anything quite like them in appearance. These BPA-free bottles are short and squat with a wide nipple. The bottle shape is slightly indented for a more comfortable grip.
I was also lured by some of the manufacturer's claims on the packaging. For example, they boast that tommee tippee closer to nature bottles offer "more natural feeding." It states that the nipple design better imitates breastfeeding action. The nipple flexes similar to the breast and is supposed to provide for an easier latch. They also boast that the flow rate changes to suit the baby's development. And finally, there is an "antic-colic" valve in the design. This valve was intended to prevent leaks and to keep the baby from swallowing excess air. It is supposed to "let baby feed without vaccuum and nipple collapse".
So would there claims stand up to my ever-so-hungry baby? Upon trying them out, I found that I was disappointed with the bottles.
Review of Tommee Tippee Bottles
It was important to note that I was using the tommee tippee 0-3 month bottles with my 5 week old breastfed baby. Because of this, it was important for me to use a bottle that was most similar to breastfeeding. The manufacturer's statements certainly seemed to meet our needs.
However, what I found was that though the nipple was supposed to adjust the flow to meet my baby's needs, she just could not keep up. I had to be very mindful to keep her in a more upright position, angling the bottle in just the right way to reduce the flow of the milk. Perhaps as she gets older the bottle will work better for her, but right now as a newborn, it just is not working for us.
Additionally, as she would suck inevitably the nipple would collapse and draw back into the bottle. This is exactly opposite of what the claims on the box mentioned.
Overall, I was really disappointed with these bottles. I only use them if all my other favorite bottles are dirty or have gone off and hid themselves under couches or inside diaper bags. I am hoping that as she grows the bottles will work better for us, but right now I am sorry I bought them at all.
I will say that I have been very pleased with other tommee tippee products, like their milk bibs mention above and their tommee tippee explora bibs.
