Meaning of Jayden:

The name Jayden is a modern baby name that did not come into use until the early 1990s. Though it appeared first on the boy's name charts in 1994, in 1998 it began climbing the girl's name chart as well.

In actuality, the name does not have a meaning as it is a name created by American parents. The baby names Hayden and Braden (derived from English surnames) were occasionally used in the United States throughout the 20th century. Then in 1994 the Irish name Aidan (now more commonly spelled Aiden) started to become increasingly popular. From their popularity, parents began creating names that rhyme with the popular -aden sound. Jayden, Rayden, Kaden, and Zayden are examples of this.

Some baby name books indicate that Jayden means "thankful" or "he will judge." These meanings were swiped from a different, albeit similar name, Jadon. Jadon is a Hebrew name found in the Old Testament. It is pronounced JAH-dən rather than JAY-den.

Popularity of Jayden:

The name Jayden (and variant spellings) could really be thought of as a "baby" of a name. Unlike other popular baby names like Jacob, Michael, and James which have been around for nearly one thousand years, Jayden only first began appearing on name charts in 1994. At the time, the spelling Jaden was slightly more popular. However, by 2003 Jayden surpassed Jaden in usage. In 2006 Jayden cracked the Top 50 Baby Names, and by 2009 nine it leaped into the top 10. In 2010, it ranked in the #4 position. For the entire 1st decade of the 21st century, the list of popular baby names of 2000 - 2009, has Jayden at rank 20.

However, when you compile name charts with similarly pronounced names together, we see Jayden move up to the #2 position, seated just behind his popular cousin, Aiden. Kaden is close behind at rank #7, and Brayden at #26.

Worldwide Jayden is rising in use as well, but not nearly as popular as it is in the U.S.

  • #10 in Netherlands
  • #14 in New Zealand
  • #17 in Canada (Alberta)
  • #17 in Canada (Saskatchewan)
  • #19 in Canada (British Columbia)
  • #20 in Australia (New South Wales)
  • #26 in Scotland
  • #32 in England
  • #45 in Australia (Victoria)
  • #62 in Canada (Quebec)

Because of its "newness", Jayden does not rank in the Top 100 Names of the Past Century.

Jayden is pronounced JAY-dən.
