Popularity of Addison:

As you probably surmised from the meaning, Addison was originally solely a masculine name. However, with the rising trend of using boy names for girls, Addison is currently drastically more popular as a girl's name here rather than a boy's name in the United States.

When you take a look at the popularity of the name overtime using data from the Social Security Administration, what you'll notice is that from 1880 until the mid 1930s, the name was used exclusively for boys. However, it would not at all be considered a common name by any means. Then from the mid 30s to the mid 80s, the name was not ranking at all within the top 1000 baby names. In 1986 the name started appearing on the charts, but again, not commonly used. As the name picked up steam on the girl's chart, it seemed to diminish the popularity on the boy's chart.

For girls, Addison only first appeared on the list in 1994. My thoughts are that the name was riding on the coattails of the exceptionally popular name Madison. Addison began to skyrocket in popularity, and by 2006 it cracked into the Top 50 Names for girls, and for the past 5 years it has been very close to claiming a covetted spot in the top 10 baby names.

Because its popularity is limited to only recent years, the name does not make it into the Top 100 Names of the Past Century.
