The name Mason comes from the English last name which referred to someone whose profession was that of a stoneworker. It also has connections as an old French name that had Germanic origins which came from the word mächen,meaning "to make."

Current Popularity of Mason:

On the 2011 Social Security Name List the name Mason ranked #2 for boys. However, if you compile the names on the Top 1000 Baby Names list together by similar pronunciation, the name actually drops to the #5 position, behind the names Aiden, Jayden, Jacob, and Jackson.

History of Use:

Mason has always been on the SSA Charts, but not with much notability. It wasn't until the 80s that the name began steadily climbing the charts. In 1997, the name finally cracked into the top 100 names, and by 2005 he broke into the top 50. From 2009 to 2010, the name jumped from rank 34 to 12. In 2011, he made it all the way to the #2 slot. What may have contributed to this jump was the notoriety the name received when Kourtney Kardashian used the monicker for her son. Though the name has been surging up the charts with increasing popularity, it isn't popular enough to make the Top 100 Names of the Past Century.
