Storing Baby Clothing

Over the past week my family has been blessed to move. Though our small, but lovable condo, had been a sanctuary of happy memories, our family of four has long outgrown the tiny space. We are currently living in a delightfully bigger home on a much quieter street. However, I write this while surrounded by towers of brown cardboard boxes and large plastic bins.

So what does my personal life have to do with Baby's First Year? Let me tell you.

A good many of those plastic bins contain neatly folded, sweet baby clothing that has been carefully organized by size, season, and color. Yep, I told you I tend to be a bit on the compulsive side. When it comes to storing baby clothes, I have found that investing in plastic bins is the way to go.

I've tried garbage bags, cardboard boxes, and sealable zipper storage bags. They don't all stack well, don't all protect as well against mold, and can become a nice little house for some unwanted four-legged critters.

So although they aren't as cheap as your household trash bags or re-used cardboard boxes, plastic bins can protect your baby items far better. If you are planning to save your baby clothing for a future baby, they may just be a worthwhile investment.

You’re right, I suppose. I am still in denial that that those vacuum storage bags are no good. It sounds so good…until you go back a few months later and see that they’ve all inflated anyway and the goods are spilling out.

It’s also so hard to know how long to hold on to things and how much to hold on to. I try to weed out the stuff that my daughter and son NEVER wore (and I know another kid wouldn’t) as well as the stuff that’s been so overworn — my husband finally just threw out the onseies with the holes himself.

I’m much better than I was. The first time my daughter outgrew her newborn clothes I cried.

My daughters are four years apart, so I had to keep baby clothes around for quite awhile. I used the 18-gallon storage tubs, (see-through) so that I could grab the right tub when I needed it. I labeled them: infant, 1-3 months, 3-6 months, etc. Worked great.
